HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – State and religious leaders are calling for an increase in security at places of worship due to a rise in hate crimes in Connecticut.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, there has been an uptick in hate crimes in the state since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war in October.

Religious and state leaders gathered on Wednesday in West Hartford to talk about an increase in funding for protection inside places of worship in Connecticut.

Some houses of worship have a panic button that sends a signal to the police department for help. The button also sends an alarm to the people inside the house of worship that the building is locked down.

“We have had bomb scares in the past we’ve had a number of things, and this is really important that we provide all the tools necessary,” West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor said.

Originally the grant program was for $10 million but right now $5 million is being released. The lawmakers say with the current climate, more funds may be released.
