HP, Silversmith to Pay $7.7 Million to Clean Up Puerto Rico Site

HP Inc. and a silversmith company will pay $7.7 million to help clean up a Superfund site in San Germán, Puerto Rico, which contaminated a town’s drinking water, according to a court-approved consent decree with the US Environmental Protection Agency.

The federal government alleged that the companies polluted public drinking supplies with tetrachloroethylene and cis-1,2-dichloroethene through contaminated soil, caused by stored chemicals that leaked into the groundwater. To remedy the pollution, the companies must extract contaminated soil and soil vapors and address broader sitewide groundwater, the consent decree says.
